Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom tooth removal is one of the most popular surgical procedures performed at the "Varshavsky" Dental Center in Kyiv. The "wisdom tooth" is the oldest tooth in the series. Often, it causes a lot of inconvenience for individuals even during the eruption phase. Very frequently, the wisdom tooth is affected by cavities and their complications, such as pulpitis and periodontitis. Effective and safe anesthesia, the experience of our surgeons, and high-quality materials for rapid wound healing make the removal procedure highly comfortable for the patients of our Dental Center in Vinogradar.

Indications for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons do not resort to removing wisdom teeth (third molars) without substantial indications:

  • Displacement or damage to adjacent teeth during the eruption of wisdom teeth (lack of space in the dental arch);
  • Wisdom tooth growing in an improper direction (at an angle), causing difficulty in chewing and potentially injuring the oral mucosa;
  • Severe decay and complications that render therapeutic treatment impossible or ineffective;
  • Partial eruption of the wisdom tooth leading to inflammation of soft tissues;
  • Wisdom tooth not fully erupted, leading to pericoronitis (accumulation of pus around the tooth in the gum tissue).

However, if the wisdom tooth is free from abnormalities and conditions that accompany its eruption (pain, inflammation of the "hood"), and if the tooth can be effectively treated and saved, removal is not necessary. At the "Varshavsky" Dental Center in Kyiv, extraction is always considered a last resort, especially if the tooth can serve as a solid support for a bridge-like prosthesis.

Types and Specifics of Wisdom Teeth Removal

The characteristics of the clinical case, including the number and type of tooth roots, location, shape, and size of the tooth, determine the methodology for further removal.

  1. Simple Wisdom Tooth Removal. This method is used for the complete removal of wisdom teeth affected by caries or pulpitis that have fully erupted and do not have twisted roots. During the surgical procedure, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon separates the gum tissue, grasps the coronal part of the tooth with forceps, and gently removes the element from the socket. Typically, this process takes no more than 20 minutes.
  2. Complex Wisdom Tooth Removal. The dentist follows the traditional algorithm but may require additional instruments. Elevators are commonly used, creating leverage when removing improperly positioned teeth.
  3. Atypical Wisdom Tooth Removal. This technique is employed for the removal of impacted (formed within the bone tissue but not erupted) "wisdom teeth." In such cases, the dentist makes a surgical incision and uses elevators. Sometimes it is necessary to divide the tooth into segments using specialized burs.

At the final stage, the dentist disinfects the created socket. In cases of complex and atypical removals, a special material is placed in the socket to promote accelerated healing. The wound is then sutured. Any type of procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and in specific cases, patients may receive general anesthesia.

At the "Varshavsky" Dental Center in Kyiv, most often we deal with complex clinical cases (complex and atypical extractions). The decision to remove a wisdom tooth is made only in extreme cases, most of which involve improperly positioned teeth, wisdom teeth with curved roots, and impacted teeth. Simply grasping and extracting such an element with forceps is not possible, requiring additional maneuvers.

In any case, within the walls of our Dental Center in Kyiv, our oral and maxillofacial surgeons are capable of solving patients' issues. Our clinic's experts effortlessly achieve complete pain relief even during complex procedures. The anesthetics we use ensure painlessness for up to 2 hours, which is more than sufficient for a high-quality extraction.

Features of Upper and Lower Wisdom Teeth Removal

Typically, the removal of "wisdom teeth" in the upper jaw is easier. This is due to the special structure of the jaw and the bone tissue (which is more porous here). However, when removing upper wisdom teeth, there is a risk of damaging the maxillary sinus, especially if the tooth roots are in close proximity to the sinus.

In the lower jaw, the bone tissue is denser, making wisdom tooth removal more challenging. Additionally, lower teeth have a more developed root system anatomically, often possessing three roots. Prior to the surgical procedure, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the "Varshavsky" Dental Center always directs the patient to undergo X-rays to determine the orientation of the tooth roots.

Why Not All Dentists Perform Wisdom Teeth Removal

It is advisable to postpone the procedure in the presence of at least one of the contraindications:

  • Exacerbation of chronic illnesses, especially cardiovascular diseases;
  • Acute infections;
  • The first and last months of pregnancy.

As practice shows, not all dentists proceed with wisdom teeth removal, especially in the case of lower molars. Lower wisdom teeth often exhibit dystopia, retention, or incomplete eruption. This implies that a complex procedure will be necessary, the success of which largely depends on the experience and professionalism of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Fortunately, at our "Varshavsky" Dental Center in the Vinogradar district of Kyiv, we have true masters of their craft. Our specialists are highly experienced surgeons who can make the right decision even in the most challenging clinical cases.

Our surgeons perform their work at the highest level, aided by quality and safe anesthesia, modern instruments, and certified materials that ensure a fast and comfortable recovery period after the intervention.

If you or your loved ones experience unpleasant symptoms such as pain around the wisdom tooth, a sensation of pressure, or irritation caused by the "wisdom tooth," it is essential to consult a dentist promptly. Timely dental care will help prevent serious complications.
